Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has released its first transparency report since rebranding, detailing enforcement actions and content removals for the first half of 2024. Despite X’s more open content moderation approach, it has actually removed more content and suspended more accounts compared to Twitter’s pre-Musk era.
From January to June 2024, X suspended 5.2 million accounts and removed 10.7 million posts for rule violations, including hateful content, abuse, harassment, and violent material. In comparison, Twitter’s last report from early 2022 showed 5 million accounts actioned and 6.6 million posts removed. Notably, X has ramped up its account suspensions, likely due to increased automation and fewer staff.
Key findings include:
- More Suspensions: X suspended 5.2 million accounts, far higher than Twitter’s 1.6 million in early 2022.
- Child Safety: Over 2 million more accounts were suspended for child safety violations compared to 2022.
- Hate Speech: X removed millions of hate speech posts but suspended far fewer accounts (2,300 vs. 111,000 in 2022).
- Legal Requests: X complied with 70% of 72,000 legal requests, an increase from Twitter’s 54% compliance in 2022.
Despite Musk’s push for a “free speech” platform, X’s actions suggest it is enforcing stricter moderation overall, though its approach to hate speech and self-harm content has become more lenient.
