A witness in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation revealed that a “very tiny screwdriver” could unlock the Mar-a-Lago storage room where ex-President Donald Trump stored classified documents for over a year. This account, relayed to FBI agents by an unidentified Trump aide in January 2023, contradicts Trump’s claims that the classified materials were always secure.

Investigators learned that the storage room door had a knob “with a pinhole” that could be locked from the inside. “Kind of like what you would find on a residential door inside of a home?” an FBI agent asked. “Yeah,” the witness confirmed. The witness’ lawyer, John Irving, added, “Like when my kids lock themselves in the bathroom.”

This revelation supports concerns raised by Smith about the security of the documents at Mar-a-Lago. Trump was indicted last June on 37 counts related to his handling of classified materials post-presidency. Prosecutors claim he refused to return hundreds of classified documents and took steps to hinder the government’s efforts to retrieve them. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
