At a White House event Monday, Donald Trump and senior health officials are expected to highlight a disputed link between autism and the use of Tylenol during pregnancy. The idea, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, revives a controversy over acetaminophen that mainstream medical research has not supported.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for promoting debunked vaccine theories, said a government report on autism’s causes would be unveiled this month. Trump previewed the announcement over the weekend, which will also raise claims about folate levels and autism symptoms.

While some smaller studies have suggested prenatal acetaminophen exposure might be linked to autism or ADHD, larger analyses show otherwise. A study of more than 2 million children in Sweden found no connection. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has also concluded there is no clear evidence linking prudent acetaminophen use in pregnancy to developmental disorders.

Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol, said independent science “clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism” and warned against misinformation that could put pregnant women’s health at risk.
