HAVANA, Cuba — A Russian-flagged oil tanker carrying hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude has entered Cuba’s exclusive economic zone, signaling a potential easing of the island’s worsening energy crisis.
According to Reuters, the tanker Anatoly Kolodkin departed from Russia’s Primorsk port with roughly 650,000 barrels of crude and is expected to dock at Cuba’s Matanzas port if it maintains its current course.
The shipment would mark Cuba’s first oil import in more than two months, offering potential relief to a country facing widespread fuel shortages, rolling blackouts, and economic strain. Additional reporting indicates the U.S. has signaled it will not block the tanker, despite earlier efforts to restrict oil deliveries to the island.
Cuba has struggled with a severe energy crisis after reduced shipments from key suppliers, leading to rationing and disruptions to basic services. The incoming oil could temporarily stabilize electricity production and fuel availability.
The situation reflects broader geopolitical tensions involving U.S. sanctions, Russian support for Cuba, and global energy disruptions tied to ongoing conflicts. Officials have not clarified whether this shipment signals a broader policy shift or a one-time exception.
