Washington, D.C. A UFC event staged on the White House South Lawn turned political after heavyweight fighter Josh Hokit used his victory speech to repeat a false and degrading claim about former first lady Michelle Obama.
Hokit made the remark after knocking out Derrick Lewis during UFC Freedom 250, an event tied to President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the upcoming 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. Speaking with Joe Rogan in the Octagon, Hokit said, “Michelle Obama is a man,” then asked the crowd, “Am I right, America?”
The statement echoed a long-running conspiracy theory used to target Obama with gender-based and racialized attacks. There is no evidence supporting the claim.
The event drew attention because it placed a professional fight card on White House grounds, mixing sports, military pageantry, Trump allies, and culture-war politics. The Guardian reported that the event featured patriotic staging, chants of “U-S-A,” and appearances by high-profile supporters.
Reaction came quickly online. Tim Miller, a former Jeb Bush communications director and anti-Trump Republican commentator, wrote that the remark occurred “on the White House lawn” during an event sponsored by Bud Light and streamed on Paramount Plus. Former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau questioned whether others with microphones condemned it.
Michelle Obama has previously addressed similar attacks, saying, “We have to pick leaders that don’t do that.”
