Donald Trump’s various court proceedings are starting to overlap. His first criminal trial, the hush-money case, is set to begin with opening arguments on Monday at 9:30 a.m. This is the first of four criminal cases against the former president to be heard in court.
In this case, prosecutors allege Trump manipulated his financial records to conceal a $130,000 payment made to Stormy Daniels to suppress news of an alleged affair. Trump denies both the affair and the allegations of falsifying his financial records.
Simultaneously, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Judge Arthur Engoron will hear arguments over Trump’s bond in his civil fraud trial. New York Attorney General Letitia James has requested the judge to reject the $175 million bond posted by Knight Specialty Insurance Company, arguing that the company doesn’t meet the required standards of trustworthiness and competence for insurers in this business.
The bond has been a contentious issue. Trump’s lawyers argued he couldn’t afford the original $454 million judgment amount initially ordered by the court. The appellate court agreed and reduced his due amount to $175 million on March 25, which Trump posted on April 1.
It’s unclear which courtroom Trump will attend on Monday. His court appearances have reportedly led to increased traffic on Centre Street in Manhattan and necessitated heightened city security. Representatives for Trump and the Attorney General’s office have not yet responded to requests for comment.
