Former President Donald Trump is set to begin his first criminal trial, marking the first time a former U.S. president has faced such charges. The indictment includes 34 criminal counts related to payments allegedly made to silence stories during the 2016 election. The case centers on over $400,000 received by Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, as repayment during Trump’s first year in office. The payments were listed as a “legal retainer” in Trump’s ledger, which prosecutors argue was done to conceal the expenses.
Trump has made numerous failed attempts to get the case dismissed and has sought to have Judge Juan Merchan recused due to his daughter’s involvement with Democratic politics1. Despite these efforts, the trial is set to proceed, with both Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen potentially testifying.
Andrew Cherkasky, a former federal prosecutor, noted that Trump could still employ delay tactics, such as firing his entire defense team on the morning of the trial. Despite the high number of Democratic voters in Manhattan, Cherkasky does not believe the case is a guaranteed win for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
