On his first day in office, President Donald Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, calling the deal “unfair and costly.” Trump stated, “The United States will not sabotage their own industries, while China pollutes with impunity.” The decision was one of several executive orders Trump signed after his inauguration.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the withdrawal, citing devastating wildfires in Southern California as evidence of the urgent need to address climate change. “If you don’t believe in science, believe your own damn eyes,” Newsom said, sharing images of wildfire damage.

However, studies such as a 2024 World Weather Attribution analysis have found no statistically significant connection between climate change and wildfires in other countries. Despite this, Newsom has consistently labeled California’s wildfires as a “climate emergency.”

Trump has yet to respond to Newsom’s comments regarding the Paris Agreement.
