President Trump warned Monday he may declare a national emergency after Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) said the city’s police will stop cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement following the expiration of Trump’s emergency authority.
In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Bowser of yielding to pressure from Democrats, writing that the Metropolitan Police Department “will no longer cooperate with ICE in removing and relocating dangerous illegal aliens.” He added, “I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!”
Trump previously praised Bowser for coordinating with federal authorities, pointing to a crime drop after troops were deployed in the capital. But Congress declined to extend his 30-day emergency authority over D.C.’s police force last week. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said an extension was unnecessary since the city had been cooperative.
Bowser clarified her executive order ended emergency measures and returned policing to pre-crisis operations. She said immigration enforcement was never part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s mission: “With the end of the emergency, it won’t be what MPD does in the future.”
The Army separately extended National Guard authorization in the city through November 30.
