President Trump on Monday threatened an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports, escalating his ongoing trade dispute with Beijing. The threat, issued on social media, comes as part of his administration’s broader tariff strategy targeting dozens of countries.
Trump said the new tariff would take effect April 9 unless China reverses its recent 34% increase on U.S. goods. He warned that failure to comply would also result in the termination of talks with China.
The administration had already imposed 20% tariffs on Chinese goods over fentanyl, with the 34% increase tied to broader trade issues. If implemented, total tariffs on Chinese imports could exceed 100%.
Despite the sharp warning to China, Trump indicated possible relief for other nations. “Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately,” he wrote.
Markets remained in negative territory midday Monday, after briefly surging earlier in the day on a false rumor of a tariff pause. The administration has denied any pause is being considered.
