President Donald Trump warned Thursday that the U.S. will impose a 200% tariff on European wine, champagne, and spirits if the European Union moves forward with its planned 50% tariff on American whiskey.
The EU tariff, set to take effect April 1, is a response to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump, in a social media post, demanded the tariff be removed immediately, threatening swift retaliation.
“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump wrote, adding that the move would benefit U.S. wine and champagne producers.
Trump had hinted at the action earlier in the week, telling reporters, “Of course I will respond.” The dispute is the latest trade escalation between Washington and Brussels, which have clashed over tariffs affecting multiple industries.
