President Donald Trump’s most vocal Republican critics in Congress—Rep. Thomas Massie, Sen. Mitch McConnell, and Sen. Rand Paul—are all from Kentucky, drawing MAGA attention to the state’s political battles.
Trump has vowed to help unseat Massie after he was the only House Republican to oppose the short-term spending bill. Meanwhile, Paul is expected to be the lone Senate Republican voting against the package and has opposed multiple Trump nominees. McConnell, who is retiring next year, has also voted against Trump-backed nominees and criticized the administration’s Ukraine policy.
Trump allies are closely monitoring the race to replace McConnell. His son, Donald Trump Jr., warned against electing McConnell’s preferred successor, Daniel Cameron, calling him “entirely controlled” by McConnell.
Massie is using Trump’s attacks to fundraise, joking that “Canada will eventually cave” to Trump’s pressure, while he won’t. The GOP divisions in Kentucky could influence Senate leadership and Trump’s political influence moving forward.
