Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump revived discussion about potentially arming civilians in Iran, suggesting the United States may already be facilitating the transfer of weapons as tensions with Tehran continue.
In a recent interview, Trump said he was “very torn” on the idea but argued that unarmed civilians cannot effectively challenge an armed regime. He referenced past protests in Iran, claiming large numbers of unarmed demonstrators were killed during government crackdowns.
Trump also suggested that weapons had previously been sent into the region but were diverted, adding that if civilians were armed, they could mount resistance. He further claimed Iran’s military forces have been weakened economically and operationally during the conflict.
The remarks appear to mark a shift from earlier reports that Trump had been hesitant to support arming civilians due to concerns about organization and effectiveness against Iran’s military forces.
The comments come as ceasefire violations have escalated, including missile attacks and clashes involving U.S. forces in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump declined to say whether the ceasefire remains intact.
