President Trump signed an executive order restricting federal funding for schools that teach critical race theory and gender ideology. The order directs the Secretaries of Education and Defense to create a strategy within 90 days to remove such teachings from classrooms, including those in Department of Defense-run schools.

The action reinstates the 1776 Commission, an initiative promoting “patriotic education.” Trump stated that some versions of American history misrepresent the nation’s founding by portraying systemic racism.

While the executive order fulfills a campaign promise, its impact is uncertain since education decisions are primarily made at the local level.

Critical race theory is an academic framework examining how race and racism intersect with institutions. While it originated in higher education, conservatives argue that diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in K-12 schools amount to critical race theory.
