MIAMI, Florida — Federal prosecutors have subpoenaed former FBI Director James Comey as part of a broad investigation into alleged misconduct tied to intelligence assessments surrounding the 2016 election and its aftermath. The probe, centered in Florida, has issued more than 130 subpoenas targeting officials from the Obama- and Biden-era intelligence community, signaling an aggressive expansion of the inquiry.
According to reporting, investigators are examining the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian election interference, including how conclusions were reached and whether proper standards were followed. A CIA “Tradecraft Review” cited concerns that aspects of the assessment deviated from established analytical practices, potentially affecting credibility. Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan have both been referenced in connection with the review and prior investigative scrutiny.
The investigation follows a criminal referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who alleged a broader effort to undermine Donald Trump beginning in 2016. Critics of the probe, including some former officials, have characterized it as politically motivated, describing it as “a vendetta in search of a crime.” Others have raised concerns about the venue in Florida, where cases may be overseen by a Trump-appointed judge.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has defended the inquiry, framing it as a necessary legal effort to address alleged misconduct and ensure accountability across federal agencies.
