President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is taking federal control of Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and deploying the National Guard, citing what he called an “emergency” over crime.
“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals… and we’re not going to let it happen anymore,” Trump said. Under the Home Rule Act, he can assume control of the department for up to 30 days without congressional approval and deploy the National Guard without local consent. Troops will not make arrests but will support law enforcement.
Trump appointed DEA Administrator Terry Cole to lead the department during federal oversight. The move comes despite D.C. data showing violent crime is down from last year, with 2024 marking a 30-year low. Trump has questioned the accuracy of those statistics, citing allegations of altered reports and high-profile incidents, including the killing of a congressional intern and an attack on former DOGE staffer Edward Coristine.
Federal agencies, including the FBI, DEA, and Secret Service, have already surged personnel into the city. Trump also pledged to remove homeless encampments.
