WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said the United States is “strongly considering” withdrawing from NATO, citing frustration with allies over their response to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and key global shipping routes.

Trump criticized NATO partners for declining to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply. He described the alliance as ineffective in the current crisis, signaling a potential shift in long-standing U.S. foreign policy commitments.

The president also singled out the United Kingdom, questioning its military readiness, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized continued support for maritime security but ruled out deeper involvement in the conflict. U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have suggested Washington may reassess its NATO relationship following the conflict.

Military advisers have reportedly warned that a broader operation to secure the shipping route could significantly extend the conflict timeline. Trump indicated that U.S. troop involvement in the region could wind down within weeks, even as tensions remain high.

A U.S. withdrawal from NATO would represent a major geopolitical shift, raising concerns among allies about security coordination and the future of the alliance.
