President Trump on Tuesday expressed support for a proposal to provide financial bonuses to mothers after childbirth, telling reporters the idea “sounds like a good idea to me.” The remark came amid reports that the White House is exploring ways to boost the declining U.S. birth rate.

The proposal under discussion reportedly includes giving mothers up to $5,000 following the birth of a child. Trump’s comment was brief and followed by a pivot to another topic.

According to The New York Times, the “baby bonus” is part of a broader set of ideas being reviewed by administration officials during recent meetings with advocates and policy experts. One such pitch included increased funding to educate women about their menstrual cycles, aimed at helping them better understand ovulation and fertility.

The proposals are being considered as part of the administration’s response to demographic challenges tied to falling birth rates across the United States.
