WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is sending a U.S. hospital ship to Greenland, a Danish territory he has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring.
Posting on Truth Social before hosting Republican governors at the White House, Trump said he was working with Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to dispatch “a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!!” Neither the White House nor Landry’s office immediately responded to requests for clarification about the ship’s status or whether Danish or Greenlandic authorities had requested assistance.
The U.S. Navy operates two hospital ships, the USNS Mercy and the USNS Comfort, though neither is based in Louisiana. Tracking data cited by Reuters showed the Mercy docked in Mobile, Alabama earlier this month.
Denmark’s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has previously said Greenland does not require outside medical aid. The announcement comes as NATO allies increase Arctic defense coordination amid heightened tensions involving Russia and China. Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources have drawn renewed geopolitical focus in recent years.
The post also followed an evacuation by Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command of a U.S. submarine crew member near Nuuk for urgent medical treatment.
