Former President Donald Trump has announced that among his first priorities if reelected will be to pardon individuals imprisoned for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. This declaration was made via Truth Social, where he outlined his initial agenda to “Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned.” Trump’s stance has consistently been sympathetic toward the rioters, considering pardons for some and even participating in fundraising efforts for their legal defenses.

These statements come amidst Trump facing federal and state charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. With over 1,200 people charged and more than 700 guilty pleas in connection to the Capitol riot, Trump’s pledge marks a significant promise to his supporters as he positions himself for a potential rematch against President Biden in the upcoming election.
