President Donald Trump has signed an executive order creating specialized National Guard units to address what he calls a national “crime emergency.” The move broadens the Guard’s role in domestic law enforcement and has sparked partisan debate.

Trump framed the issue in political terms, saying, “The Republicans are the party that wants to stop the crime. We’re against crime; the Democrats like crime.” Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker rejected the possibility of federal deployment in Chicago, warning that Trump is “searching for any justification to deploy the military in a blue city.”

Democratic leaders urged their party not to shy away from crime debates. At the Democrats’ summer meeting, Insha Rahman of the Vera Institute of Justice argued that crime rates are falling due to Democratic-led policies and investments. Chicago Alderman Michael Rodriguez credited local progress to economic growth and community investment, opposing militarization of city streets.

Polling shows public support for Trump’s actions, with a Harvard CAPS/Harris survey finding 54% approve. Meanwhile, House Oversight Republicans opened an investigation into whether Washington, D.C., police manipulated crime data, citing a whistleblower’s claims.
