President Trump announced new tariffs and a travel ban on Colombia after the nation refused entry to U.S. deportation flights carrying Colombian migrants. Trump criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro, stating, “This denial has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States.”

In retaliation, Trump implemented a 25% tariff on Colombian imports, restricted travel for Colombian officials and their allies, and warned of further measures. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations,” Trump added in a Truth Social post.

Petro, who had earlier rejected U.S. deportation flights, argued, “The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,” and called for proper protocols for humane treatment.

The Trump administration has begun deportation flights using military aircraft as part of its broader immigration crackdown. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that those entering the U.S. illegally would face “severe consequences.”
