DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — President Donald Trump said the United States could seize Iran’s key oil export hub while also suggesting a diplomatic resolution to the conflict may still be possible.
Trump said U.S. forces could take control of Kharg Island, which handles the majority of Iran’s oil exports, adding that his “preference would be to take the oil.” At the same time, he indicated a deal with Iran “could be made fairly quickly.”
The comments come as the U.S. continues to increase its military presence in the region, with thousands of additional troops deployed, including Marines and elements of the 82nd Airborne Division. Military planners have reportedly discussed limited ground operations targeting strategic infrastructure.
Kharg Island plays a central role in global energy markets, and any attempt to seize it would likely disrupt oil flows and further escalate tensions. Analysts warn such a move could broaden the conflict and increase risks for U.S. forces.
Iranian officials have responded with strong warnings, signaling potential retaliation if U.S. troops enter the country. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue, though their status remains uncertain.
