President Donald Trump announced that Washington, D.C., is now a “crime free zone,” citing a federal law enforcement surge ordered on August 7. He praised Mayor Muriel Bowser for cooperating with his administration and urged other Democratic-led cities to adopt a similar approach.

“Mayor Muriel Bowser of D.C. has become very popular because she worked with me and my great people in bringing crime down to virtually nothing,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, contrasting her stance with officials like Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

According to Metropolitan Police Department data, violent crime in D.C. fell 39% in the 25 days since the surge compared to last year, with homicides down 58% and carjackings down 82%. Property crimes also dropped, though assaults with a deadly weapon rose 8%. Arrests increased 25% and firearm recoveries 20%.

Bowser said the surge gave officers needed support but criticized the presence of masked ICE agents and National Guard troops. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem signaled more resources may soon be directed to Chicago and other Democratic-led cities.
