Trump told House Republicans Tuesday that his sweeping new tariffs will help the GOP win big in the 2026 midterms. Speaking at a National Republican Congressional Committee fundraiser, he predicted a “tremendous, thundering landslide,” claiming the tariff strategy would be “legendary.”

On the same day, he raised tariffs on China again—now totaling 104%—despite market instability and internal GOP resistance. Multiple Republican lawmakers in both chambers are backing legislation to limit a president’s ability to unilaterally impose tariffs. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) are among those leading the effort.

Trump ridiculed those pushing to limit his powers, calling them “rebel Republicans” who “want to grandstand.” He claimed foreign governments were “kissing my ass” and dismissed congressional oversight: “You don’t negotiate like I negotiate.”

House Democrats, meanwhile, plan to use the tariff issue against Republicans. DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) called the approach “chaos and dysfunction” and warned of long-term economic fallout from trade retaliation.
