President Donald Trump criticized Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday, following their heated exchange at the White House over transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“You saw Maine yesterday, right? The governor of Maine,” Trump said, prompting boos from the audience. “She’s fighting to keep men in women’s sports… It’s not pretty.”
The dispute began Friday during the National Governors Association meeting, where Trump told Republican governors he would withhold federal funding from states that refused to comply with his executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. When Trump directly asked Mills if she would comply, she responded, “I’m complying with state and federal law.”
“We are the federal law. You better do it because you’re not going to get federal funding,” Trump shot back.
“See you in court,” Mills replied.
