President Trump said Saturday that American military and commercial ships should not have to pay fees to travel through the Panama Canal and Suez Canal, arguing that both strategic waterways “would not exist without the United States.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to “immediately take care of” the situation. The State Department has not yet commented.
Trump has previously floated the idea of reclaiming control of the Panama Canal from Panama, accusing China of exerting influence over the critical trade route. Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino has insisted the canal will remain under Panamanian control.
Trump also suggested that American vessels should travel through Egypt’s Suez Canal without paying fees. The Suez Canal remains a major artery for global trade, though recent Houthi rebel attacks have disrupted traffic.
