Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Sunday he has agreed to speak with Iran’s new interim leadership following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.

In a phone interview with The Atlantic’s Michael Scherer, Trump said, “They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them,” though he declined to specify when discussions would occur. He added, “They should have done it sooner.”

The remarks come after coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure, which also killed Khamenei, according to U.S., Israeli and Iranian state media reports. Tehran has since established an interim governing council made up of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and Guardian Council jurist Ayatollah Alireza Arafi while the Assembly of Experts selects a permanent successor.

Trump has framed the military action as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to eliminate what he called “imminent threats.” Iran has denied pursuing a nuclear weapon and retaliated with missile strikes across the region.

U.S. officials have urged Americans overseas, particularly in the Middle East, to monitor embassy security alerts as tensions remain high.
