The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Thursday against Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County, challenging their sanctuary city policies. The Justice Department argues these laws obstruct federal immigration enforcement and violate the Constitution’s supremacy clause.
The lawsuit targets Illinois’ Way Forward Act, TRUST Act, Welcoming City Act, and a Cook County ordinance, claiming they prevent cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The administration also cites the Laken Riley Act, which mandates detention for certain undocumented immigrants, arguing local policies hinder its enforcement.
Illinois and Chicago officials defend sanctuary policies, saying they build trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities. Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) supports deportation for violent criminals but opposes using local police as immigration agents.
The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to block these laws, potentially setting a precedent for other sanctuary jurisdictions.
