WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump administration has filed a federal lawsuit against Harvard University, alleging the school failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

The Justice Department claims Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by allowing a “hostile educational environment” to develop during campus protests. The lawsuit alleges the university was aware of harassment targeting Jewish and Israeli students but failed to enforce its own policies or take sufficient action.

Federal officials are seeking to recover billions in taxpayer funding, escalating an ongoing dispute between the administration and Harvard. Previous efforts by the administration to cut federal funding and restrict international student access have faced legal challenges, with courts blocking some actions.

Harvard has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit. The administration previously concluded the university violated federal civil rights law and warned that failure to address concerns could result in financial penalties.

The case is part of broader scrutiny of universities’ handling of antisemitism and campus protests in recent years.
