The Trump administration announced Tuesday it would cut federal funding for several Princeton University climate-related research programs, citing conflicts with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) policy objectives.

According to the Department of Commerce, which oversees NOAA, three Princeton projects were flagged: the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System, Climate Risks and Interactive Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Predictability, and Advancing Prediction. The administration claimed these programs promoted “exaggerated” and “implausible” climate threats.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ordered the termination of the Cooperative Institute program, stating it “fosters fear rather than rational, balanced discussion.” The other two programs were cut for their focus on sea-level rise, precipitation changes, and declining water availability linked to global warming.

The decision follows similar moves by the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Defense Department, which suspended multiple Princeton grants last week.

Princeton University has not yet commented on the funding cancellations.
