Following Thursday night’s press conference, three additional House Democrats urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, reflecting increasing dissatisfaction within the party. Democratic Reps. Jim Himes (Conn.), Scott Peters (Calif.), and Eric Sorensen (Ill.) joined 13 other House Democrats and Sen. Peter Welch (Vt.) in calling for Biden to step aside, citing concerns about his ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.
Himes emphasized the need for the strongest candidate to confront Trump’s agenda, while Peters and Sorensen expressed doubts about Biden’s capacity to run a successful campaign. Biden’s press conference, which addressed global and domestic issues, was marred by gaffes, including referring to Vice President Harris as “Vice President Trump” and confusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with “President Putin.”
Despite mixed reactions from House Democrats, the calls for Biden to step down are intensifying, with Himes warning that failing to reconsider Biden’s candidacy could lead to a second Trump presidency.
