Signs are emerging in recent polls that independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other third-party candidates could challenge Donald Trump now that President Biden is no longer in the race.

Earlier polling in a three-way contest between Trump, Biden, and Kennedy showed mixed impacts on the major-party candidates, often hurting the Democrat more. However, since Vice President Harris replaced Biden, many polls indicate she performs better with third-party candidates included.

“That no longer seems to be the case,” said Democratic strategist Jon Reinish. Kennedy’s independent bid, launched in October, adds uncertainty to the race. Despite initially polling in low double digits, Kennedy’s presence raised concerns about him acting as a spoiler for Trump or Biden. Recent polls now show Harris closing the gap with Trump and even leading in some cases when third parties are considered, shifting the race’s dynamics.

Democratic engagement in the race has also increased, with more expressing confidence in the Harris-led ticket.
