Austin, TX — Voting rights groups are suing Texas after more than 500,000 voter registration applications and updates submitted through the state’s driver’s license system went unprocessed, some dating back nearly a year.

The League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund are asking a state judge to enforce a 2021 settlement requiring Texas to maintain a functioning process allowing residents to register to vote while completing online driver’s license or identification transactions.

The backlog was caused by a software update error involving the Department of Public Safety’s web portal. County election officials received hundreds of thousands of delayed records last month, while separate problems with the secretary of state’s voter registration system have complicated efforts to clear them ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.

The lawsuit argues that the failures violate the state’s earlier agreement and says some Texans are still experiencing registration problems.

The plaintiffs want the court to order DPS and the secretary of state to maintain a reliable registration system, disclose records explaining the failures and demonstrate compliance within 30 days.

State officials had reportedly been aware of problems with the system as early as March.

DPS and the Texas Secretary of State’s Office had not publicly responded to the latest lawsuit.
