St. Paul, MN — A former Macalester College professor has been charged with felony property damage after allegedly spilling urine on a student’s backpack, causing more than $2,000 in damage.
Paul Fischer, 55, was charged Oct. 7 in Ramsey County with first-degree property damage. According to the criminal complaint, a student left her belongings unattended for about six minutes near Fischer’s office last December and returned to find urine on her backpack and items inside it.
The student later reported the incident to police. Investigators learned that Macalester had documented at least six other urine-related incidents in the Olin-Rice Science Center over roughly a year, including urine found in trash cans, water bottles and faculty decorations.
Police said Fischer acknowledged developing a habit of urinating into a cup and disposing of it in trash cans or laboratory sinks around campus. He allegedly told investigators he believed urine accidentally spilled onto the student’s belongings while he was emptying a container near his office.
The student estimated the damage at $2,070.
Fischer resigned after 25 years at Macalester. The college said his employment ended during the 2025-26 academic year and declined further comment because the criminal case remains pending.
If convicted, Fischer could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
