The U.S. Supreme Court has begun deliberations on Donald Trump’s appeal to evade prosecution for his attempts to reverse his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden. Trump’s legal team contends that former presidents should have absolute immunity for their official actions to prevent politically driven prosecutions of ex-presidents, which could hinder their ability to serve as commander in chief.
However, lower courts, including a unanimous three-judge panel on a Washington appeals court, have dismissed these arguments. The Supreme Court’s decision timing could be as crucial as the decision itself. This is because Trump, the likely 2024 Republican presidential nominee, is striving to postpone the trial until after the November election. The later the justices deliver their decision, the higher the chance he has to succeed. Typically, the court issues its final opinions by the end of June, approximately four months before the election.
