Senate Republicans voted against advancing a bipartisan border security and foreign aid package on Wednesday, resulting in a 49-50 vote. The package, aimed at funding the war in Ukraine, Israel, and Indo-Pacific security, saw opposition from most Senate Republicans, with Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, James Lankford, and Mitt Romney voting in favor. Sen. Bernie Sanders and some Democrats also voted no, with Sanders citing opposition to military aid to Israel.

Senate Majority Leader Schumer plans to propose a new package focusing on aid for Ukraine and Israel without the border security deal. The rejected package sought to pair Ukraine funding with border reforms, a demand Senate Republicans have made for months. Negotiations led by Sen. Lankford and the White House aimed to raise asylum standards and grant emergency deportation powers, but faced backlash from Senate conservatives and former President Trump, criticizing it as inadequate for border security. Schumer criticized Republicans for blocking reforms they previously demanded, attributing the opposition to Trump’s influence. Republicans, however, defended their stance by questioning the Biden administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
