Some Senate Democrats are concerned about the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) plan to certify Joe Biden’s presidential nomination weeks before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Skeptical about Biden’s chances against former President Trump, they hope to find another nominee before the election. The DNC plans a virtual roll call by August 7, giving Biden’s critics only three weeks to rally around another candidate. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin expressed skepticism about certifying Biden’s nomination early. Other senators have voiced concerns privately, fearing a messy battle with Biden’s allies.
Biden has faced resistance within the party, with criticism over his age and stamina. He had a sharp exchange with Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) after Crow questioned Biden’s fitness. House Democrats, led by Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), opposed an early certification vote, warning it would undermine party morale. The DNC’s decision was initially influenced by Ohio’s legal requirements but was later questioned after Ohio’s legislature passed a bill extending the ballot certification deadline. DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison defended the early roll call, citing compliance with Ohio law.
