Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) accused Democrats of backing pro-Palestinian protesters for political advantage during a Sunday interview on “The Cats Roundtable” with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM. Facing re-election in Texas against Rep. Collin Allred (D-Texas), Cruz criticized the Biden administration and Democratic policies on immigration and foreign affairs, focusing on the pro-Palestinian movement’s impact on the upcoming election.

“They’re having pro-Hamas rallies, and the Democrat Party is paralyzed because they want the votes,” Cruz stated. He further accused Democrats, the criminal justice system, and school administrators of leniency towards students participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses.

Cruz advocated for strict consequences for students threatening others during protests, suggesting arrest, prosecution, and expulsion for those making threats. His comments followed the Manhattan district attorney’s office dropping charges against 31 of 46 students arrested at Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall due to insufficient evidence and lack of criminal history.

Columbia University is considering expulsion for numerous students involved in the protests, part of a larger trend where over 3,100 individuals have been arrested for participating in pro-Palestinian campus protests, according to a New York Times tracker.

Cruz also alleged that student protesters were funded by individuals linked to Hamas and criticized the Justice Department for being too politicized to investigate these connections, accusing some donors of also supporting President Joe Biden and his own Democratic opponent.

In May, Cruz and a group of GOP Senators urged the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to investigate nonprofit organizations financially supporting National Students for Justice in Palestine, which coordinates pro-Palestinian college movements nationwide. The IRS has not yet responded publicly to this request.

“Don’t send money to people who want to murder you,” Cruz asserted. “The Democrat party is lined up in support of essentially our enemies.”
