Russia has rejected a U.S.-backed 30-day ceasefire proposal for Ukraine, despite Ukraine already accepting the deal, Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed Thursday.
Speaking on state television, Ushakov dismissed the ceasefire as merely a “breather” for Ukrainian forces and reiterated Moscow’s demands:
- Recognition of Russian annexation of Crimea and four southeastern regions.
- Withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Russian-claimed territory.
- A pledge that Ukraine will never join NATO.
- Elections to replace Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The rejection comes as U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff meets with Russian officials in Moscow, following the Trump administration’s decision to restore military aid to Ukraine after ceasefire talks in Saudi Arabia.
Trump, who is pushing for a ceasefire, warned Russia of financial consequences if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate. Meanwhile, Russian forces have regained territory lost during Ukraine’s offensive last summer in the Kursk region.
