Washington, D.C. — A new report from the Brookings Institution estimates that roughly 205,000 children were separated from at least one parent during President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement campaign between January 2025 and April 2026.

Researchers say the separations stem from expanded interior immigration arrests and detentions carried out after Trump returned to office. According to the report, approximately 145,000 of the affected children are believed to be U.S. citizens.

The analysis argues official Department of Homeland Security statistics likely undercount the true number of family separations because many children remain with relatives, friends, or guardians outside formal government tracking systems.

The Trump administration has defended its immigration policies, emphasizing stricter enforcement against undocumented immigrants and arguing stronger border security and deportation measures are necessary to restore immigration law compliance. DHS officials have maintained the agency “does not separate families,” stating parents facing detention or deportation often make independent arrangements for children.

Immigration advocates and civil rights groups dispute that characterization, arguing the practical impact of mass detentions frequently leaves children without stable parental care, even when no formal separation policy exists.

The report comes as Congress recently approved roughly $45 billion to expand immigration detention capacity through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” potentially increasing future enforcement operations.

Critics warn the expanded crackdown could create broader humanitarian and legal concerns involving mixed-status families, while supporters argue the administration is fulfilling campaign promises to strengthen immigration enforcement and reduce illegal immigration.
