Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, has criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson over recent government funding bills. Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, assumed the speakership in October after the ousting of former speaker Representative Kevin McCarthy of California. Since then, Johnson has overseen a bitterly divided GOP House caucus, which has been most pronounced over government funding bills.

Johnson managed to pass a $1.2 trillion minibus spending bill with support from Democrats last month, keeping the government funded through the end of September. However, this has led to discontent within the GOP, with members calling for steep spending cuts in exchange for their support of these bills, something Democrats have refused to accept.

Paul blasted Johnson in a recent interview, suggesting that his leadership would be no different from a Democrat’s. He criticized Johnson for supporting the spending bill with a minority of Republicans and the majority of Democrats, arguing that this is not using the power of the purse, but abdicating it.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, recently introduced a motion to remove Johnson from office the same day the spending bill passed the House. Johnson responded to Greene’s threats, warning that it would not be helpful for the Republican Party to continue to govern, maintain, and keep their majority in November.
