President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Stanford professor Dr. Jay Bhattacharya as the next director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), completing his top health appointments. Bhattacharya, a key figure in the “Great Barrington Declaration” opposing COVID-19 lockdowns, will work with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was earlier tapped to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Announcing the decision on TruthSocial, Trump said the two appointees would “restore the NIH to a Gold Standard of Medical Research” and tackle chronic illness and disease. Bhattacharya, a Stanford-trained physician with four degrees, emphasized plans to rebuild trust in scientific institutions, writing on X that he aims to “make America healthy again.”
NIH, with a $47 billion budget, oversees clinical trials, drug development, and grants for researchers. Bhattacharya’s appointment requires Senate confirmation, where Republicans will hold the majority in the coming year.
Trump’s health team also includes Martin Makary for the FDA, Dr. Mehmet Oz for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Janette Nesheiwat as Surgeon General, and former Rep. David Weldon for the CDC.
