Nearly half of U.S. voters say rising prices for food and consumer goods are their top economic concern, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. The issue ranked higher than housing costs, the stock market, and job security.
“In a rare moment of political unanimity, Democrats, Republicans and independents in equal numbers worry most about the prices of what they eat and what they buy,” said polling analyst Tim Malloy.
Twenty percent of respondents cited housing or rent as their primary worry, followed by 17% for the stock market and 6% for employment. The poll also revealed how voters have adjusted their spending: nearly a third said they’ve delayed major purchases, while 60% reported no change in habits.
Party breakdowns showed Democrats were most likely to delay large purchases, while Republicans were least likely to change spending behavior.
The results follow a Reuters/Ipsos poll showing many Americans expect price increases due to President Donald Trump‘s recent tariff overhaul.
