WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Attorney General Pam Bondi told members of the House Oversight Committee that Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump’s nominee to become the next attorney general, was responsible for overseeing the Department of Justice’s review and release of records connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to testimony released Thursday, Bondi repeatedly stated that Blanche, who served as her deputy and later became acting attorney general, managed what she described as the “entire release of the Epstein files.” Her remarks came during a congressional investigation examining the Justice Department’s handling of records related to Epstein and his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking offenses.
Bondi acknowledged that errors occurred during the release process, including problems involving redactions, but maintained that the department acted in accordance with the law and remained committed to transparency. At the same time, she sought to clarify that she did not personally conduct document reviews and delegated oversight responsibilities to Blanche.
Lawmakers have scrutinized the Justice Department’s handling of the files, with critics raising concerns about redactions and the protection of victims’ personal information. During her testimony, Bondi also stated she opposed any pardon for Maxwell, calling her a “monster” and saying she believed Maxwell should remain in prison.
Democrats on the committee are now urging Chairman James Comer to call Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to testify as part of the ongoing congressional investigation into the Epstein case.
