A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday found that 60% of voters oppose President Donald Trump’s plan to shut down the Department of Education, while 33% support it.

Opposition is strongest among Democrats (98%) and independents (64%), while 67% of Republicans favor closing the agency. Men are more supportive than women, but majorities in both groups oppose the move.

The poll comes as the Trump administration begins downsizing the department, cutting half its workforce this week. Education Secretary Linda McMahon called the layoffs “the first step” in eliminating the department, though Congress would need to pass legislation to fully abolish it—a move that faces steep Senate hurdles.

Democratic-led states have sued the administration over the layoffs, while Trump allies push to transfer remaining education programs to other agencies.

The poll surveyed 1,198 registered voters between March 6-10 and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
