Washington, D.C. — House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) has rejected an offer from former President Bill Clinton to participate in a transcribed interview as part of Congress’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, increasing the likelihood of a full House vote on criminal contempt of Congress charges against both Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Comer said the Clintons must comply with subpoenas by appearing for sworn depositions, arguing that witnesses do not get to set the terms of congressional investigations. In a social media post, Comer wrote that “the Clintons do not get to dictate the terms of lawful subpoenas,” signaling that negotiations had broken down.

According to committee correspondence, Clinton’s attorneys proposed that Bill Clinton sit for a transcribed interview related to Epstein matters, while former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would submit a sworn written declaration. The Republican-led committee rejected the proposal, maintaining that both must testify under oath to satisfy the subpoenas.

The Oversight Committee advanced contempt charges last month after the Clintons declined to testify, calling the subpoenas invalid and politically motivated. Their attorneys argued the demands lacked a legitimate legislative purpose and violated separation-of-powers limits outlined by the Supreme Court.

Despite those objections, several Democrats joined Republicans in supporting contempt charges, citing the need for transparency in the Epstein investigation. Bill Clinton’s past social relationship with Epstein has resurfaced amid renewed scrutiny, though he has not been accused of wrongdoing.

The dispute follows the Justice Department’s release of more than three million Epstein-related files, fueling bipartisan claims that additional documents remain undisclosed.
