Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) narrowly leads a CNN poll asking Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents which political leader best reflects the core values of the Democratic Party.
The open-ended survey produced varied responses:
- 10% named Ocasio-Cortez
- 9% named former Vice President Kamala Harris
- 8% named Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
- 6% named House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.)
- 4% named former President Barack Obama and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas)
- 2% named Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.)
A plurality (26%) had no opinion, while 5% said no one and 5% gave other responses.
The results highlight uncertainty over party leadership as Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress. Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of Schumer for backing a GOP spending bill has amplified divisions within the party.
The survey of 1,206 respondents was conducted March 6-9 with a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
