Washington, DC — Former President Barack Obama sharply condemned the Trump administration’s investigation of Rep. Ilhan Omar on Sunday, arguing that the federal government is being used to punish a prominent political critic.

Obama called the Oct. 12 search of Omar’s Washington home “appalling” and said Americans should be alarmed regardless of their opinions about the Minnesota Democrat. Federal agents executed a court-authorized warrant as part of an investigation examining decades-old immigration and citizenship records involving Omar and her late father.

Obama said the investigation rests on an “unsubstantiated theory” that Omar improperly obtained citizenship because of a discrepancy involving her recorded birth year. Omar has denied wrongdoing, and a previous federal review during Trump’s first administration reportedly found insufficient evidence of citizenship fraud.

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” Obama said.

He compared the case with previous prosecutions and investigations involving Trump critics and warned that normalizing politically motivated law enforcement could create a precedent future presidents of either party could exploit.

Trump has denied directing the Omar investigation while continuing to publicly attack her. No criminal charges have been filed against Omar, and the government has not publicly produced evidence proving she committed immigration fraud.
