Washington, DC — Republican lawmakers are threatening to withhold support for major Pentagon funding and other pieces of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda as anger grows inside the GOP over his recent moves benefiting Russia.

Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, a retired Air Force brigadier general, said Republicans who support Ukraine may refuse to fund Trump’s priorities after the president eased sanctions on Moscow, opened the door to Russian diesel imports and pressured Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

“Many of us won’t fund these things knowing he is propping up a dictator’s invasion and throwing an ally under the bus,” Bacon wrote.

The warning is significant because Trump is seeking hundreds of billions of dollars in additional Pentagon funding through budget reconciliation, along with other priorities lawmakers are expected to consider after the midterm elections.

Republican criticism has expanded beyond Bacon. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina has accused the administration of capitulating to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while other GOP lawmakers have raised concerns about restrictions placed on Ukraine’s access to intelligence and the Starshield satellite network.

Trump has defended his approach as serving U.S. interests and lowering energy costs.

The dispute gives congressional Republicans considerable leverage: Trump cannot secure the additional defense spending he wants without lawmakers approving the money.
